MEET TARA

As a Charleston-based newborn photographer and a mom myself, I know how quickly those first few weeks after your baby arrives can feel like a whirlwind. Between sleepless nights, endless diaper changes, and getting to know your little one, planning a newborn session can seem overwhelming. That’s why I’m here to help you with all the Charleston newborn session prep you need, making the process as easy and stress-free as possible so you can focus on what really matters—soaking up those precious early moments with your baby.

In this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know about Charleston newborn session prep, from choosing the perfect outfits (don’t worry, I’ve got you covered!) to making sure you and your baby are comfortable and relaxed on the big day.

Timing is Everything

The ideal time for your Charleston newborn session is within the first two weeks after birth. During this period, babies are still in that sleepy, curled-up stage, which makes it easier to capture those adorable poses and sweet details—like tiny toes and sleepy yawns. Babies also tend to sleep more soundly in those early days, which allows for smoother sessions.

However, if you’re past the two-week mark, don’t worry! We can still create beautiful, meaningful images of your baby. The key to successful Charleston newborn session prep is flexibility, and I’ll work with you to ensure we schedule a session that feels right for your family’s needs.

What to Expect During the Session

My Charleston newborn sessions are designed to be relaxed, calm, and centered around you and your baby. We’ll take our time, and I always allow plenty of room for breaks—whether it’s for feeding, cuddling, or just giving your little one some extra snuggle time. Newborn photography isn’t about rushing; it’s about capturing those genuine, quiet moments that tell your baby’s story.

Most sessions last around two hours, depending on how your baby is feeling. While it may sound like a long time, remember that Charleston newborn session prep includes taking breaks as needed. I want you to feel completely at ease, and I’ll guide you through every step so that you can focus on enjoying the experience.

Choosing the Right Outfits (Hint: I’ve Got You Covered!)

One of the most common questions I get from parents about Charleston newborn session prep is, “What should we wear?” The good news is, you don’t have to stress about this at all! I provide a carefully curated studio wardrobe for moms, babies, and siblings. My goal is to make sure you not only look beautiful but feel comfortable too.

For moms, I have a selection of soft, neutral-toned dresses that are perfect for Charleston newborn sessions. These dresses are designed to flatter postpartum bodies and allow you to feel confident and at ease. They’re lightweight, breathable, and easy to move in—because when you’re holding and soothing a newborn, you need an outfit that’s both functional and comfortable.

For babies, I provide simple, cozy wraps and outfits that let your baby be the star of the show. Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the images timeless. And for siblings, I offer clothing options that will complement the overall look of the session, making your Charleston newborn session prep even easier.

This wardrobe service is part of my commitment to making your experience as seamless as possible. I want you to feel pampered and taken care of, so when you arrive, you can focus on being present with your baby.

Preparing Your Baby

A key part of Charleston newborn session prep is making sure your baby is comfortable and ready for their time in front of the camera. Here are a few things you can do to help:

  • Feed your baby before the session. A full tummy usually means a sleepy, happy baby. If possible, try to feed your little one right before we start, so they’re more likely to settle into those cute, sleepy poses.
  • Keep your baby awake for a little while beforehand. This isn’t always possible, but if you can gently keep your baby awake for a short time before the session, they may fall into a deeper sleep once we get started.
  • Bring a pacifier. If your baby takes a pacifier, having one on hand can be a lifesaver during the session. It helps soothe them in between shots and keeps them calm.

The most important part of your Charleston newborn session prep is ensuring your baby’s comfort. If we need to stop for a feeding or cuddle break, that’s perfectly fine. We work on your baby’s schedule!

What About Mom and Dad?

It’s easy for new parents to get caught up in the logistics of Charleston newborn session prep, but this is a special time for you too. I always encourage parents to be part of the session, even if you’re feeling a little less put together than usual. These images aren’t about perfection—they’re about connection and love.

For moms, I know how you might be feeling in those early weeks after giving birth. My goal is to help you feel beautiful and at ease. Whether you choose something from my wardrobe or bring your own favorite dress, I’m here to make sure you feel confident in front of the camera. Dads are welcome to keep it simple—soft, neutral clothing works best, and I’ll guide you with poses that feel natural and comfortable.

After the Session

Once your Charleston newborn session is complete, I’ll get to work editing your images. My editing style focuses on soft, natural tones that highlight the beauty of your family without feeling overly posed or filtered. You’ll receive a gallery of edited images that tell the story of your baby’s early days, and I offer a range of options for printing and displaying your photos—because these are moments you’ll want to cherish forever.

If you’re ready to book your session or if you have any questions about Charleston newborn session prep, I’d love to chat with you! Send me a message, and we can start planning a session that will beautifully capture these fleeting moments. These early days go by so fast, but your photos will last a lifetime.
